why deepthroat by cupcakke is actually the best song ever.

Only meaningful lyrics get to me, damn you Cupcakke!

A couple of years ago, I came across the Chicago rapper and I was captivated. Her rapid-fire wit, her “no fucks” attitude, and confidence (verging on cockiness) inspired me deeply. When I first heard the song Deepthroat, I realized this was an important song that inspired a conversation so necessary to have in our times. Here’s a retrospective on why Deepthroat matters.

Deepthroat isn’t just about oral fellatio, it is about freedom.

Our four fathers intended Cupcakke to write this masterpiece. In an age where a woman’s sexual freedom is still taboo, Cupcakke defied your male privilege by stating “I am here, I am a woman, and amongst many other things, I am a sexual being. Deal with it!” A passage in the song brought tears to my eyes when the native Chicagoan exclaimed:

“Just come put it down my butt (my butt)

let’s shoot a movie no cuts,

ride the dick, get my nipples licked.

That’s breastfeeding while we fuck (thirsty)”

Sorry, I need a moment.

This could easily be dismissed as just some woman describing some random sexual acts. But in reality, Cupcakke is asserting her dominance and feminist power by taking a stand, and putting herself first for once. The inclusion of “let’s shoot a movie no cuts” is indeed an nod to the ongoing battle of equal wage for women in the entertainment industry. Look at Cupcakke, paving the way.

Deepthroat takes a stance against rape culture.

The moment I heard the lines “don’t need no drink to get naughty (no) ’cause bitch, I’m not Bill Cosby (I’m not)” I stood up and cheered. This is a woman who has had enough. This is a woman who isn’t afraid of this male-dominated industry that so often fails to protect victims. By mentioning a powerful, and often feared, television personality and linking him to his over fifty allegations of abuse, Cupcakke fearlessly said to the victims, “I am here with you, I will fight for you, we will end this together.” Thank you Cupcakke!

Deepthroat promotes hygiene and oral care.

“My pussy mean, and it’s clean (it is)

I’m not a squirter, I cream (squirt, squirt!)

Keep it smelling like baby wipes,

I never smell like sardines (ew!)”

Promoting good feminine hygiene, while uncomfortable to many, is a topic that is often necessary. By promoting good hygiene, she is also preventing painful conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs), vaginitis, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and yeast infections, amongst others. Cupcakke knows the complicated state of healthcare in the country. By sharing her hygienic ways, besides promoting a healthy lifestyle, she is preventing you from paying that high deductible or being told that having a vagina is a preexisting condition. While we wait for a reasonable healthcare reform to take over, listening to her advice, should help carry us through.

“Mouth wide open, mouth wide open,

mouth wide open like I was at the dentist.

Mouth wide open, mouth wide open,

put it so deep I can’t speak a sentence!”

In this emotional passage she courageously encourages good oral health care. God knows, I could’ve used this song growing up!

At just over three minutes in length, Deepthroat gave me the strength I needed to get through my day. In an age where even our president avoids the important issues, I thank Cupcakke for starting this debate. Why are we treating women’s rights as of less importance than men’s? Why do we live in a culture that glorifies the abuser? Why isn’t a health reform a clear priority to our government? Perhaps we won’t get those answers today, but because of Cupcakke, I will keep asking those questions.
